Denver International Film Festival

GALLERY RECOMMENDATIONS AND BRIEF REVIEWS FOR THE DENVER INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Those attending opening night film and celebrations for the Denver International Film Festival next week will be treated to one of the
most crowd pleasing films to come along in quite some time. In "The
World's Fastest Indian," Anthony Hopkins stars as Burt Munro, an old
speed freak from down under, New Zealand, only the kind of speed
he's into can only be found on a motorcycle. His lifelong dream has been to travel to the US and hit the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah to become the Fastest Indian of all time. The film tells the tale of how he achieved his dream, at the spry age of 72. It's a ribald
tall tale that just so happens to be true, and to this day Munro still holds records for his racing category. When I first heard the premise it sure sounded limited in for broad-based interest and
crowd appeal, but the reality is that "The Fastest Indian" may be the feel good film of the year, and thoroughly engaging all the way through it's 2 hour running time. There is very little to challenge the viewer, as the film rides along like standard hollywood fare, but the story itself is good enough to make for a purposeful journey, and
the acting by Hopkins is simply top notch. There should not be a dry
eye in the house when this screens, and not because it's a sad story ...rather it's an uplifting tale that has many lessons about how to approach life, and how treating strangers with respect may lead
to extremely satisfying results. Hats off to the programming staff for getting another winner for opening night.

Here are a few more thoughts on some of the films that have been
previewed for the festival, broken down by category:

DOCUMENTARIES

"El Perro Negro" is an absolute must for all lovers of image and editing, not to mention history. More of an abstract documentary, the film works on many levels, but is most appealing as a masterpiece of montage and sound design. This treatise on the Spanish Civil War is less of a textbook, and more a dreamlike representation of events that relate to a monumental event in world history. The seemingly lost footage of early auteurs who found solace in their daily lives through a movie camera creates a view into the past that is pretty stunning to behold. Like many classics of cinema, the film makes you question current politics and even life-views through a representation of life at it's most basic. The entire piece is extremely beautiful, and somewhat reminiscent of films such as "Decasia" and "Man with a Movie Camera." It is a rare and spectacular film that fits perfectly for a festival audience.

If you are looking for heavy, intense political content with far reaching implications, check out the German/Lebanese production "Massacre." The film is a tightly woven interpretation of events surrounding a 1982 massacre of Palestinians in Beirut, perpetrated by militiamen with strong ties to Israel. There is no action to speak of in this recounting, merely the interwoven stories of six men who participated and are willing to discuss quite frankly the circumstances and emotions that dictated that time of their life. The film is powerful on many levels, but certainly not for everyone, as even the most hardened cinephile may find it challenging in it's pacing and delivery. Nevertheless, it stands as a unique, gripping analysis of history that also pushes the boundaries of the genre. The debate over what you can believe through documentary representation in film will certainly be stirred in many ways as a result of this entry.

Another fascinating outing for hardcore documentary lovers only is the British/Cameroon feature "Sisters in Law." Touted as the only documentary to screen in the Directors Fortenight at Cannes 2005, this film certainly ventures into territories not yet explored while directly relating to a much wider realm of interest. The subject is the law, and how it is processed in the remote third world country of Cameroon. While it initially comes off as a Cameroon "People's Court," the film quickly becomes an intense study of the principles of law and how they are met by two women who operate as prosecutor and judge in a tiny African community. The cases documented are equally harrowing and beguiling, yet the tone of the film is extremely straightforward, delivering a view into a world that seems unbelievable in how similar it is to ours, yet so distant in its development. It is easy to get wrapped up into the structure that bleeds one case into the next, dealing with issues such as rape and child abuse. As disturbing as the material is, ultimately the film gives a glimpse of hope into a society that seems to have very little.

Any film that tries to capture the essence of Buddhism through seeking out and documenting actual "hermits" of China should be lauded for it's attempt. "Amongst White Clouds" has a simplicity
and beauty that is almost enough to carry this depiction of one mans spiritual journey, complemented by a narrative trek that digs for variety and stature amongst the teachers of the trade. Still, it's mostly for those who will connect with the subject matter who will likely never experience such a unique personal journey as that the filmmaker has taken. Those with a passing interest in the subject, however, may find the actualization of the Buddhist lifestyle, well, a little boring!

Don't bother with the short "The Gates Ethereal," attaching itself to last years phenomenal art installation in NYC's Central Park by Christo and Jean Claude. Obviously not sanctioned by the artists themselves, this is a droll undertaking that comes off as a standard tourist's eye view experiencing a walk through the park. The filmwork is downright crummy and is complemented by a musical score that is thoroughly grating. Instead of wasting the 30 minutes offered up here (as the second part of the program "Modigliani: Body and Soul", wait for something by Albert Maysles to come out, or revisit his stunning series about the artists on DVD, the incomparable "5 Films about Christo and Jean Claude."

FOREIGN NARRATIVES

Up for the annual Kieslowski award for Best Feature Film, "Ants in the Mouth" is a spirited story that claims Cuba as it's context, by way of Spanish filmmaker Mariano Barroso. Definitely a well shot, good looking film that's deviously plotted and dramatic in tone. I wouldn't say there's all that much depth to any of the characters or the storyline for that matter, but its a very watchable film that a broad audience will likely enjoy. The actors are all pretty elegant and interesting to watch, and for me, that's one of the real joys in watching foreign films.

"Ellektra" is another entry for the Kieslowski award, and one that is a little bit more exciting to watch. I have to say, this movie really caught hold of me, as it declared it's cinematic tone early on and carried through a breezy 90 minutes on a stylish wave that obviously pushes a few buttons in the junkie-thriller genre, but offers a very pleasing ride. The narrative structure is dense with many characters to follow, but it manages to keep you engaged and interested in seeing the conclusion to a seemingly overblown plot. I can't say it really makes a whole lot of sense in the long run, taking it's far-reaching context to great extremes, but it is a whole lot of fun and really quite stunning to watch. The image compositions and cinematography show a broad range of talents for this genre in European cinema, and the actors are bizarre enough to be engaging, with some outstanding performances, particularly from the lead actress. This is definitely a piece for a crowd that likes their cinema bold and brash.

"Girlfriend," aka "Someone Please Stop the World" is presented as part of a tribute to Japanese filmmaker Ryuichi Hirokii, a filmmaker who got his start directing erotic films. One of his latest features, "Girlfriend" is a well intentioned contemporary drama with general appeal that will be easy for most audiences to enjoy and digest. Though more or less very straightforward in its direction, this coming of age story should appeal to a more mature young audience that's looking to connect with real-world issues. The lead characters, two women who's sexuality is constantly in question, reveal the layers of depth to their current makeup through issues of family, workplace and friendship. It's a great example of how cinema progresses a regional tone based in tradition, yet unveils a distinct view of contemporary society, finely crafted yet not necessarily going for the jugular. The festival this year hosts a salute to Japanese Cinema, and Hirokii's films sits well in the center of a national cinema that is rarely available outside of mainstream hits.

We'll have more coverage of the festival in the next two weeks. For more information about the festival including a full schedule and event information, visit www.denverfilm.org
