Meeting Minutes: September 29, 2004
Opening:
The regular meeting of the Ballpark Neighborhood Association was called
to order at 6:00 PM on September 29, 2004 at McClain Finlon by Max
Silverman.
Board members present:
JOHN S., MAX, JUDY, JOLEEN, MARY, DAVID T., DAVID M., AMY H., R. PHELPS, AND JOHNNY K.
COMMANDER DILLEY GAVE A BREIF SYNOPSIS OF THE EVENTS ON AUGUST 26, 2004. MAX SILVERMAN GAVE OUT PLAQUES RECOGNIZING THOSE OFFICERS HELPING SUBDUE THE KNIFE WEILDING MAN. OFFICERS: DAN O’SHEA, LYNN NEDERHOOD, DAN O’BANNON, ROBERT PINE, KRISTY GARCIA AND THOMAS SNACHEZ (NOT ALL WERE PRESENT) WERE RECOGNIZED AND THANKED BY THE BALLPARK NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION. COMMANDER DILLEY REMINDED ALL THOSE IN ATTENDANCE THAT THESE TYPES OF DANGEROUS EVENTS CONSTANTLY CONFRONT POLICE OFFICERS.
COMMANDER DILLEY ADDRESSED NEIGHBORHOOD CONCERNS ABOUT THE RECENT SHOOTING OUTSIDE CLUB SOUL AND EXPRESS THAT NO LIQUOR CODE VIOLATIONS HAVE OCCURRED IN THE LICENSED PREMISE. SHE HAS BEEN IN COMMUNICATION WITH CURT SIMS AND HE IS LOOKING INTO HIRING OFF DUTY DENVER POLICE TO HELP WITH HIS SECURITY. THE BPNA IS CONCERNED ABOUT HEALTH AND SAFETY IN THE EARLY AM HOURS AND ESPECIALLY IN BAD WEATHER.
NARCOTIC PROBLEMS ARE BEING ADDRESSED AT 3-4 DOWNTOWN LOCATIONS. OFFICERS ARE CONDUCTING REGULAR SWEEPS TO KEEP PROBLEMS UNDER CONTROL. IT TAKES ABOUT 1-2 ARRESTS TO CURB THE PROBLEM BUT IT USUALLY REAPPEARS AFTER A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME.
SCRUFFY MURPHY’S ASKED WHAT THEY CAN DO TO IMPROVE THE NEIGHBORHOOD. COMMANDER DILLEY RECOMMENDED THEY CONTACT CURT SIMS AND DISCUSS METHODS OF MAINTAINING THEIR PREMISE AND CROWD CONTROL.
DAVID T. SAID THAT THE 21 AND 2200 BLOCK OF CURTIS HAS BEEN HEAVILY TAGGED WITH GRAFFITI. THERE HAVE BEEN SKATEBOARD PARTIES IN 2250 LAWRENCE ST. ON SATURDAY AND SUNDAY NIGHTS. THERE HAS ALSO BEEN RAVE PARTIES HELD PERIODICALLY AT 2220 BROADWAY. HOMLESS CAMPERS HAVE BEEN SETTING UP IN THE VACANT LOT AT 2134 LAWRENCE ST.
KIM FROM JUDY MONTERO’S OFFICE SAID THAT ELBRA WEDGEWORTH IS TAKING THE LEAD ON THE TRIANGLE PARK AT BROADWAY, LAWRENCE AND PARK AVENUE WEST. BRENT SNYDER FROM BROADWAY PLAZA LOFTS WAS WORKING WITH PARKS AND RECREATION ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TRIANGLE PARK. HE HAD COMMISSIONED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS TO DRAFT A PLAN. MANY PEOPLE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAVE EXPRESSED CONCERNS FOR BUILDING A NEW RESTROOM FACILITY WHEN EXISTING FACILITIES THROUGHOUT THE CITY ARE LOCKED OR CHAINED SHUT. IN SOME INSTANCES, PORT-O-POTTIES ARE PLACED NEXT TO THE LOCKED RESTROOMS. THE CITY PAYS RENTAL AND MAINTAINANCE FEES ON THESE UNITS. THE CITY IS WORKING THROUGHOUT DENVER TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF BEDS FOR HOMELESS PEOPLES.
JOHN RAE FROM CORRECTIONAL MANAGEMENT INC. HELPED KIM EXPLAIN TO THE ATTENDEES WHAT THE CHANGE IN THE MUNICIPLE CODE REGARDING THE COMMUNITY CORRECTIONAL FACILITIES IN I-1 AND I-2 ZONE DISTRICTS. CURRENTLY WE HAVE NOT FACILITIES IN OUR AREA BUT THEY COULD BE ESTABLISED AND HANDLE UP TO 120 INDIVIDUALS IF THE ORDINANCE PASSES. THERE IS A REQUIREMENT OF 200 SQARE FEET OF GROSS FLOOR AREA PER PERSON.
JOHNNY KLEIN INVITED EVERYONE TO THE WALNUT FOUNDARY @ 30TH & WALNUT ST. FOR THE REST OF THEIR EVENT ALSO OCCURRING TONIGHT CONCURRENTLY WITH THE BPNA MEETING. THERE ARE NOW 8 ART GALLERIES PARTICIPATING IN THE “FIRST FRIDAYS” GALLERY NIGHTS.
